Kenneth L. Reed

This course will be a start to finish, chronological order discussion of the most important ways to increase patient comfort through sedation. We’ll begin the session with a discussion of oral sedation including patient selection and better agents for specific procedures. Then we’ll discuss nitrous oxide in addition to the combination of oral sedatives with nitrous oxide.

Educational Objectives:

  • Discuss the pharmacokinetic differences between agents used for enteral sedation
  • Discuss the significant differences between “half-life” and “clinical duration of action” of a drug
  • Describe the safety profile of nitrous oxide
  • Discuss the use of nitrous oxide with orally administered sedatives to achieve a “titratable” technique
